South Carolinians are naturally good judges of barbeque because only in South Carolina, of all the nation’s states, do people regularly cook and serves all four types of barbeque – vinegar and pepper, mustard-based, light tomato-base and tomato-based.
But being a Certified South Carolina Barbeque Judge is something else again!
The South Carolina Barbeque Association conducts classes in how to become a certified judge. The standards in South Carolina are, just as you would expect, a little more demanding than those set by other barbeque associations.
Requirements for judges
In South Carolina you can become a Certified South Carolina Barbeque Judge by becoming a member of the South Carolina Barbeque Association, complete a daylong seminar and judging in four different publicly held, SCBA sanctioned barbeque cook-offs.
In addition to all of the fun you are going to have when you become a Certified Judge, you will receive a certificate and an apron with the words "SCBA Certified Judge" on it.
When you join the SCBA you will be invited to judge in various barbeque cook-offs around the state. In South Carolina you will have dozens of events each year at which you may choose to judge unlike some organizations where judging opportunities are very limited.
Please go to the “Join Us” page and become a member of the SCBA. We will be in touch with you and let you know when and where the next judging seminar will be held.
Then you can join with hundreds of your fellow South Carolinians (and many from out-of-state too) in enjoying that most quintessentially Southern cuisine and the one that South Carolinians do best – South Carolina Barbeque!
